about lawrence scarpa

Born in Queens, New York in 1959 and trained as an architect, Lawrence Scarpa developed a love for making art at a very young age while on a construction site with his father where he would make objects from various construction waste materials. All his art from his childhood experiences is of creating with found objects.

Exploring the ordinary in the extraordinary, Scarpa seeks to establish rich connections for those who experience it—a layering of the ephemeral with the permanent that parallels the notion of multiplicity, creating vibrancy beyond the nature of the individual. Entwined in its encounter are memory, experience and the senses. Like the cumulative nature of experience, Scarpa naturally incorporates conditions and effects where senses cross, blur, switch, and merge. His work explores the ostensibly insignificant impact of the indeterminate on the whole, the tension between the comforting and the random and a structure of orderliness layered with the impermanent or random capturing the sensations of gravity, balance, and motion.

Concepts are developed in close collaboration with clients, project consultants, landscape architects and civic entities grounding the artwork with the community vision and within a resilient and tough integrity. Works are created using practical and safe and durable applications of material.

Trained as an architect, Mr. Scarpa has been working with Art in Public Places for over three decades. His work has appeared in over 100 museums, galleries and cities around the world including the Mcnay Museum of Art, San Antonio, Texas, Gwangiu Biennale, South Korea, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, The National Building Museum, Washington, DC, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, Polk Museum of Art , Portland Museum of Art and The Four Seasons in New York. His work is part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian National Design Museum, Washington, DC, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California, The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York and The Haworth Friendship Collection, Detroit, Michigan. He has been honored with numerous awards including the National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the American Institute of Architects, Gold Medal, the institutes highest honor..

He has temporary or permanent art in public places in the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, Texas, City of Lakeland, Florida, City of Seattle, Washington, City of Santa Monica, CA, City of Raleigh, NC, City of Pembroke Pines, FL, Cedar City, UT, City of Los Angeles, Monterrey, Mexico and other places around the USA. His work ranges from small park benches and bus stations to large sculptures and parking garage facades in excess of $6 mil.
